Open Data in the Life Sciences: Challenges and Opportunities

The life sciences are slowly warming to open data. There have been notable successes (e.g. Genbank), but there are still many issues to be resolved. These issues include cultural issues (reluctance to share data), informatics challenges (e.g. lack of common databases), and a lack of awareness of existing standards and best practices (e.g. Darwincore standards for occurrence data). The goal for this session will be to brainstorm ways that attendees can begin to address some of these issues, possibly through a publication or novel software or internet tools.
